Most of the information below is based on true kitsune lore, but some has been adjusted to better suit the site.
Kitsune are spirits beings and messengers of the Gods who live some of the longest lives, 300 years old, and are very wise. They follow their own code of ethics and morals and will treat others nice or foul depending on if the stranger falls under what they deem correct or not. They are an effeminate species that tend to live in families and avoid killing one of their own kind. They are emotional, tempermental, and very vengeful, but their trust and loyalty is nearly unbreakable. These foxes are adept tricksters and their tricks may or may not be malevolent. Their favorite prey are the boastful, egotistical, overly proud, greedy, and the envious though the crueler ones may be unbiased, and they seek to teach lessons, often of humility. Kitsune are bound to keeping their promises and most try to avoid making them. To break a promise to a kitsune is to make an enemy of one for life. They hate asking for help and only accept help if it is willingly given.
They love freedom and cannot stand being trapped or forced into things [Note: they do not see serving Gods as forced]. A kitsune avoids gifting others with material items and instead gives gifts of protection, loyalty, knowledge and the like. A kitsune usually uses a fake name, often related to the job they're on and usually an not obvious joke. Their real names can be used against them to control them and is only given to the god they work for, immediate family, and their mate.
They resemble red foxes and can come in black, red, yellow, creams and white, but all nine-tailed kitsunes must be white or gold, changing when they acquire the ninth tail. Odd numbers of tails, other than 3, are most common. Tails can be gained through wisdom, good deeds, and favors from the gods and can be taken away for punishment and death. A kitsune will cease to exist when their last tail is lost. They are longer, taller, and more slender than normal foxes. Kitsune do not always feed off the land, but survive off energy from others and knowledge. Kitsune kits take three times as long as normal kits to grow (though weaning time is the same) so they reach adult size and age at 3 years instead of 1. Kitsune can mate with other species but prefer their partners to be willing as they feed off of the energy from the act and unwilling partners can go insane or die more often then the willing. The offspring will often result with a tiny bit of power, a fraction of what their parent had, and live as long as kitsune do.
Kitsune always have a round or union-shaped ball of light or fire. Usually it is with them, but when they possess another or shapeshift, they must hide these balls of fox-fire for safety. These fire balls hold the kitsune's soul and they will die if separated from it for too long, the older the fox, the longer the separation they can withstand. They can be used to lead others without being seen. If another gains possession of this fire ball, it can be used to secure a favor from the fox and to control it to some extent.
Once an adult, a kitsune can possess another body. Possession is a prelude to shapeshifting and is merely the taking over of another body often made obvious by strange facial expressions, frothing at the mouth, a strange sentient and moving lump on the victim's body, and a huge appetite. It doesn't last long, the length of time depends on the power of the fox. At 50 years old, they gain the ability to shapeshift by taking on another canine form. Mostly commonly they are beautiful females then female pups and elderly males but can be anything, this is true regardless of the kitsune's age or gender. Though it's a little more difficult, they can also duplicate another individual.
In order to shift, they must place reeds, a broad leaf, or a skull over their head. The last thing to shift and the first to return is/are the tail(s), especially in moments of weakness or disorientation. They may also retain a fox shaped shadow or their true reflection. They are frightened by wild dogs and dingos and will often revert to a fox shape and flee when they come in contact, as most kitsune hate them. Very rarely, a very devout creature can see through a kitsune's disguise.
Besides possession and shape shifting, all kitsune have one other power, rarely two: Invisibility, flight, ability to create illusions to distort reality, ability to enter others' dreams, or the ability to generate fire or lightning from their mouths and tails.
Kitsune are chosen by a Cuulu or Species God at birth and will act as their messengers, following them for life. They receive a mark to seal the contract from the god who chooses them in a place that isn't easy to see but will be present even after shifting. Note; Vinei gods refuse to use kitsune due to their magical qualities. Because of their close relationship with the gods, many adopt similar personalities to the god they follow. Some kitsune break free of this partnership though and go Rogue. Below are the types of kitsune depending on which God chooses them. The different types differ only very slightly with tendencies for certain natural abilities over others and slightly in personality but do not have the elemental powers of their type unless it is also a kitsune ability, like Fire. This doubles as a list for how many kitsune are in each type.
Celestial: Very rare. Follower of the Solar God. [0]
Void: Very rare. Follower of the Lunar God. [0]
Fire: Common, will almost always have the natural power of fire. [0]
Earth: Common. Rarely has natural ability of flight. [0]
Water: Common. [0]
Air: Common. Often considered 'bad' because of their trickery. Often has natural ability of flight. [0]
Light: Common. [0]
Shadow: Common. [0]
Mind: Very rare. Usually able to distort reality. [0]
Invisibility: Rare. Will usually have the natural power to turn invisible. [0]
Death: Very Rare. Usually black kitsune. [0]
Spirit: Rare. Often considered 'bad', only kitsune that can appear as ghosts and only if given the ability from the Spiritual God. [0]
Time: Very rare. Usually able to distort reality extra well. [0]
Fox: Most common kitsune known. They consider themselves the best and have an ego about being 'true to the species'. [0]
Jackals: Uncommon. These kitsune think they are superior to all but those contracted with the Fox God. [0]
Hellhound: Very rare. Are the only kitsune that can travel to Hell and back, a trick given to them when they receive Cerberus's contract mark. [0]
Rogue: Rare. These kitsune have turned their backs on their God and the contract made with them in return for complete freedom. The contract is never truly broken until the god breaks it. A Rogue's contract mark will burn and fester after they go Rogue until the mark is so scarred that it is indecipherable, but will continue to burn whenever their previous God wants them. For reasons unknown, they lose power when going Rogue and can never gain their ninth tail. Other kitsune will not help Rogues but will also refuse to hurt them. Rogues tend to stick together. The vinei god, Denear, often gains Rogue kitsunes' help but they are never contracted to him. [0]
