Hellhounds are the largest of all the species found, even larger than most of the sabertooth wolves. Hellhounds do not have any true shape-shifting abilities however.
They're appearances are vast, they can look like many things. Some look like decaying beasts, others look like hound dogs, some look like wolves, some appear to be ghosts, walking skeletons and many other things.
Hellhounds generally do not take only one mate, though once in a while this may happen. More common is the males gathering up many females into a harem, similar to horses or lions, and breeding with these females whenever they choose. They will also fight fiercely to keep what is thiers.
Hellhounds mature slowly. They are generally not capable of any reproduction until they reach 10 years of age or more. Breeding hellhounds are often very violent during the act, biting and clawing another repeatedly. It is said that the more violent the courtship, the larger the litter and healthier it will be.
There are many species of hellhounds. Listed below are the different species, giving the basics such as size, appearance, and abilities. Note: All hellhounds have the basic abilities of controlling fire, smoke, and lava.
Phantasmic Hounds: As their name implies, phantasmic hounds are ghost-like. They can appear to be solid, or as a wraith or ghost. They can also become a mist if they choose. Phantasmics are some of the smallest of the hellhound species. Males average around six feet at the shoulder and around 200 - 250 lbs. Females average around five feet at the shoulder and 180 - 220 lbs. They are very light, given their species, but also very powerful.
Decaying Hounds: True nightmares of their breed, the decaying hound appears to be in some stage of decay at all times, and can change that whenever they wish. It can be minor, such as having no fur, or it can be extreme to where the flesh is falling off the bone as you look at them, but they never appear fully skeletal. Decaying Hounds are fairly large, the males averaging 6'8" to the shoulder and weighing around 500 lbs. Females average 6 feet to the shoulder and 450 lbs.
Winged Hounds: Winged Hellhounds are as their name suggests, they bear wings upon their shoulders. They can be either draconic or bird like, but are never of any sort of "happy" color. The wings will always be black, some shade of red, and other dark colors. These wings can be used for flight. They may or may not have fur. The second largest of the species, males can easily reach 7 feet to the shoulder and 700 lbs. Females are only slightly smaller, averaging 6 feet to the shoulder and 600 lbs.
Multi-Headed Hounds: Again, as the name suggests, these hounds bear more than one head, with 2 or 3 being the most common. Of course, the most well known is the mighty Cerberus, guardian of the gates of hell. They are the largest of the species, with males easily reaching a height of 8 - 9 feet at the shoulder and a weight of over 800 lbs. Females can reach a height of 7'6" - 8'6" and weigh over 700 lbs.
Skeletal Hounds: As stated, skeletal hounds, also called undead hounds, appear as walking skeletons, with only small pieces of flesh here and there at times. They vary slightly in size, with males standing between 6'4" - 7' and weighing around 200 lbs. Females stand around 6' - 6'8" and around 170 lbs.
Wargs: Wargs are evil wolves, related so closely to hellhounds that this is where they are listed. Much larger than your average wolf, a male Warg will stand at least 6' to the shoulder and weigh in at around 450 lbs. A female will stand at least 5' feet and weigh around 400 lbs.
Resurrection Hounds: Resurrection Hounds are extremely rare. They usually possess no fur, only a hard and leathery skin. They may or may not have wings. They possess the ability to not only resurrect themselves if they are somehow killed, but also other hellhounds, but only if they catch that within the first few hours of death. Males average 7'3" at the shoulder and weigh around 800 lbs. Females average 6'9"and weigh around 700 lbs. They are very stocky and muscular. If they or the hound they are trying to resurrect is beheaded, there is no resurrection.
