What are elementals?
Elementals are creatures with the power to control one of anything listed on the elements page. They can be any species on the species board excluding those who already have innate abilities or cannot have elements due to their very nature. It is possible to have hybrids, but they aren’t nearly as strong as a purebred would be. Elementals can control anything within their element; feel free to use your imagination! When in doubt, ask yourself: Does this conflict with another element? If so, then your character can use the help of another elemental to achieve its goals, otherwise you’ll have to find another way around your problem.
How do elementals use their powers and what are their limits?
Elementals use their powers through something called ‘life energy’. It is literally their life’s energy. As they grow and learn to use their power, this energy grows, allowing a bigger pool to draw from. With practice, even a small pool of energy will last longer. If too much energy is used too fast or without proper instruction, this can leave the elemental weak, drained or sometimes even lead to death. When elementals are born, their life energy is very small. For this reason, most will not realize they have the ability unless taught. At one year, if their powers have yet to be tapped and realized, they will start manifesting on their own. The signs will be small at first, but the longer the elemental goes without instruction, the greater these signs will be eventually leading to disaster. Remember, powers take life energy. When a power goes unrealized not only is it bad for those around the elemental, but also for the user in itself.
Are there different power levels for elements?
Yes, there are no prodigies unless someone has a god in their lineage somewhere. A young elemental has a very limited life energy pool; as such he is limited to very basic uses of power. As he ages and learns to work with his power, his mastery of his element and life energy pool increases, which in turn increases his power level. Some elements have more than one aspect of element to focus on. For instance Earth has power in the ground and rock, as well as nature. An Earth Cuulu could choose to specialize in learning the ground and rock, which means his power level with rock will be high but low with nature. If he chooses to focus on both, he won’t reach the mastery specialization gave him but both his ground and nature powers will be better than the nature power in the previous example.
For hybrids, power level decreases with each added element. For example, a purebred Fire could reach 100% mastery. Her pup A is a Water/Fire, he can only reach 50% mastery. If pup A has 2 pups, pup Z and pup E. If pup Z is Water/Fire/Earth, mastery goes down to 25%. If pup E is Water/Fire/Water, he can reach 75% mastery in water and 25% in fire.
What is life energy affected by?
Life energy is depleted when the elemental is not in full health or worn down. If s/he is sick, injured, dying, this can significantly hurt the amount of life energy available. Notice life energy is not affected from being winded, but if they were to be bullied or tortured by another, their available pool would decrease. If life energy is overdrawn, it has permanent side effects, such as a shorter life span, crippling the possible uses of power or causing a physical injury or long-term illness.
What happens to an elemental when they die?
Atheron is able to survive through the life energy of the Cuulu. When the Cuulu die, they retain a small amount of life energy, this just isn’t enough to keep them alive. Life energy glows in a dead body, literally causing it to light up. The glow will slowly rise off the body, coming together into a small orb and descend to the ground. From there Atheron proceeds to absorb it. Once this is finished, Atheron will normally claim the body as well. This happens instantly; at first it’s there and then it’s not. The soul is then claimed by the gods either to punish or reward as they see fit.
What about breeding, do normals ever bear elementals and vice versa?
Since the Vinei were not present when the Cuulu were given their gift, it isn’t possible for a Vinei mommy and daddy to produce a Cuulu. Now, if a Cuulu and Vinei were to mate, there is a 90% chance a pup will be Vinei and a 10% chance the pup will be Cuulu. Genetics-wise, the Vinei have the dominant gene, whereas the elemental gift is recessive. In pairs with two Cuulu parents, there is a .05% chance to produce a Vinei, as you can see, it is exceedingly rare.
How long do elementals live?
Elementals add 100 years to the lifespan of their species. Ex. A Lightning Cuulu Saberwolf can potentially live up to 400 years. 300 for Saberwolf + 100 for Cuulu. A non-fantasy species with an element can live to be 150 years. Ex. Timber Wolf 50 years + Fire Cuulu 100 = 150.
Vinei live to be 50 years. However once Vinei leave Atheron, their lifespans return to the range as we know them.
